What you can expect

Into the stone desert on foot
Your day begins with a comfortable drive from Marrakech through the dry foothills south of the city. As the landscape shifts from green palms to pale, rolling terrain, the Agafay Desert opens ahead — a rocky, mineral expanse backed by the ridgeline of the High Atlas.
At the desert camp, you meet your camels and their handler. This is not a camel ride. You walk beside the animals at their pace, following sandy tracks through the open desert — a gentler, more grounded way to move through this landscape.
A slow walk through canyon country
The walking route leads through Agafay’s distinctive terrain: cracked earth, low scrub, wide views, and the kind of silence you rarely find this close to a city. Your guide reads the landscape as you go — pointing out geological details, local plant life, and the way light shifts across the stone ridges.
The camels carry the day’s provisions, leaving you free to walk, photograph, and simply be present. The pace is unhurried. There are natural stops for water and shade along the way.
A canyon picnic, properly set
The walk leads into a sheltered canyon — a natural enclosure of rock walls and soft sand that feels hidden from the wider desert. Here, a gourmet picnic has been prepared: Moroccan salads, grilled meats or seasonal vegetables, fresh bread, fruit, and mint tea, laid out on low tables and cushions in the shade of the canyon walls.
This is not a packed lunch. It is a properly styled outdoor meal designed for comfort and atmosphere — a highlight of the day, and the kind of moment the Agafay landscape was made for.
Poolside at a luxury desert camp
After the picnic, you return to the camp at a relaxed pace. The rest of your time is yours: swim in the infinity pool overlooking the canyon, settle into a sunbed, or simply sit with the view. The pool terrace faces the Atlas Mountains, and on a clear day the contrast between water, stone, and sky is quietly spectacular.
A different kind of desert day
This experience is designed around what Agafay does best when you strip away the noise: open space, natural beauty, good food, and time that feels unhurried. There are no quads, no shows, no crowds. Just a well-paced walk, a beautiful meal in a canyon, and a poolside finish with mountain views. It is one of the most peaceful ways to spend a half-day outside Marrakech.

Good to know
Everything you need to know for a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Is this a camel ride or a camel walk?
This is a walking experience. You walk alongside the camels at their natural pace through the desert — you do not ride them. The camels carry the picnic provisions and gear, leaving you free to walk, photograph, and enjoy the landscape at a comfortable rhythm. This makes the experience accessible to a wider range of fitness levels than a traditional trek.
How physically demanding is the walk?
The walk covers approximately 3–4 km on flat but uneven ground — rocky paths, packed earth, and patches of soft sand. There are no steep inclines. A reasonable level of mobility is needed, but this is not a strenuous hike. The pace is gentle, with natural stops along the way for water and shade.
What is the difference between Private, Small Group, and Group?
All three formats follow the same itinerary and include the same picnic, camel walk, and pool access. Private bookings offer a dedicated vehicle, guide, and flexible pacing for your party only. Small Group joins up to 8 guests with a shared guide and vehicle. Group format accommodates up to 17 guests. The experience and inclusions are identical across all options.
Can dietary needs be accommodated for the picnic?
Yes. The canyon picnic can be adapted for vegetarian, vegan, and most common dietary requirements. Please let us know at booking so the kitchen can prepare accordingly. The meal includes fresh salads, grilled dishes, bread, seasonal fruit, and mint tea.
Is pool access included and how long can we stay?
Pool access at the luxury desert camp is included in the experience. You can use the infinity pool, sunbeds, and terrace after the walk and picnic until the scheduled departure back to Marrakech. Towels are provided at the camp. Spa treatments and additional activities at the camp are available at extra cost.
What happens in very hot weather or during summer months?
Between June and August, departure times shift earlier in the morning to avoid the midday heat. The canyon provides natural shade during the picnic, and the pool offers relief afterward. Your guide carries water throughout the walk and adjusts the pace as needed. In cooler months (October to April), conditions are generally ideal for walking.
