Agafay Desert: Camel Trek, Quad Biking and Moroccan Lunch Half-Day
- Half-Day Activity, Day Trip, Active Adventure
The Agafay Desert sits just 40 minutes from Marrakech — a vast rocky plateau where stone hills sweep toward the Atlas Mountains and the silence is immediate. This half-day brings together two of Agafay’s most satisfying activities: a camel ride across the undulating terrain and a guided quad biking session through the open desert. A traditional Moroccan lunch at the camp rounds out the morning before you head back to the city.

Reasons to book this tour
Ride a camel across Agafay’s wide rocky plateau — slow, quiet, and surprisingly expansive, with the Atlas Mountains in the distance.
Take the wheel of a quad and follow a guide through dry riverbeds and open stone trails across one of Morocco’s most accessible desert landscapes.
Experience the contrast of both activities back to back — the camel’s unhurried pace followed by the quad’s open throttle makes the half-day feel full and varied.
Discover a landscape that looks nothing like the sandy Sahara but delivers its own dramatic version of the desert, just 40 minutes from your riad.
Sit down to a real Moroccan lunch in the Berber tent — tagine, fresh salads, bread, and mint tea — after both activities are done.
Leave Marrakech for the morning and be back before early afternoon, keeping the rest of your day free.
What you can expect

From Marrakech to the Stone Desert
The drive to Agafay takes around 40 minutes, and the shift in landscape is already part of the experience. The city’s rooftops give way to flat plains, then to the rocky plateau of the Agafay — pale stone hills, wide open sky, and the Atlas Mountains visible in the distance on a clear morning.
Your guide introduces the terrain and explains the two activities ahead. At the base camp, helmets, goggles, and a traditional cheich scarf are ready and waiting.
Up on a Camel, Across the Plateau
The camel ride begins at the edge of the camp. Your guide introduces you to your camel and walks you through mounting safely before leading you on a gentle loop across the plateau. The pace is slow and unhurried — the kind of movement that makes the desert feel wide rather than rushed.
The rocky terrain surrounds you, the Atlas sits on the horizon, and for 45 to 60 minutes, this is the most straightforward thing in the world. It is a good contrast to everything that comes next.
Off the Camel, Onto a Quad
The shift from camel to quad is one of the real pleasures of this half-day. After a safety briefing and a short practice run, your guide leads the group out across Agafay’s open trails — through dry riverbeds, across stone flats, and over terrain that has no equivalent closer to the city.
The session runs for around an hour, with the guide adapting pace to the group. No prior experience is needed, and the desert provides plenty of space to find a rhythm. The landscape stays impressive throughout: an open, mineral world with views in every direction.
Tea and a Moroccan Lunch at the Camp
Both activities behind you, you settle into the Berber tent for mint tea. It is a natural pause — the dust settles, the noise drops, and the conversation picks up. The lunch that follows is proper: a traditional tagine served with fresh salads, Moroccan bread, and something sweet to finish.
This is not a quick snack stop. The meal is a real sit-down moment at the end of an active morning — served with the desert still on full view outside the tent.
Back in Marrakech by Early Afternoon
The drive back takes around 40 minutes. You are typically in Marrakech by early afternoon, leaving the rest of the day available. The half-day format is deliberate: enough time in the desert to do both activities properly, without the fatigue of a full day away from the city.

Transfer — Your driver collects you from your Marrakech accommodation and heads southwest toward the plateau. The drive takes around 40 minutes as the city gives way to open plains and the rocky hills of Agafay come into view.
-
Base Camp Arrival & Safety Briefing

Mint Tea Break at the Berber Tent
Tasting — Back at camp, a glass of mint tea marks the transition between the two activities. A short, relaxed pause under the shaded tent before the quad session begins.

Good to know
Everything you need to know for a smooth and enjoyable experience.
What is the difference between Private, Small Group, and Group options?
The Group option runs on a shared departure with other travelers — typically up to 15 guests per group, with a shared activity guide for each section. The Small Group option limits the group to a maximum of 8 guests, with a more attentive guide ratio and a less crowded experience on the camel and quad trails. The Private option is exclusively for your party — your own vehicle, your own guide, your own schedule, and solo quads (rather than shared) included as standard.
Do I need experience to ride a quad bike?
No prior experience is required. Your activity guide runs a full safety briefing and a short practice drive before the main session begins. The terrain in Agafay is open and manageable — there are no steep drops or technical obstacles, and the guides adapt the route and pace to the level of the group. The minimum age to ride a quad independently is 16; guests under 16 are welcome to ride pillion with an adult.
Is this suitable for children? What is the minimum age?
The camel ride is suitable for children from age 4 onwards, accompanied by a parent or guardian. For quad biking, children under 16 may ride pillion with an adult rather than solo. Children under 4 are not recommended for this activity due to the uneven terrain and physical demands of the ride. If you are traveling with young children, the Private option gives you the flexibility to adapt the pace and duration as needed.
What is the terrain like? Is it dusty?
The Agafay Desert is a rocky stone plateau — it looks quite different from the sandy Sahara. The quad biking route runs across dry riverbeds, open stone tracks, and gently undulating terrain. It is bumpy and can be dusty, particularly during the quad session. An air compressor is available at the camp after the ride so you can clean off your clothing and gear before lunch. We recommend wearing a cheich scarf over your face during the quad section, which is provided as part of the tour.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting dusty, and closed-toe shoes — open sandals are not permitted for quad biking. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential, especially on morning sessions when the sun is low and direct. A camera or phone is useful for photos during the camel ride and at the camp. All safety equipment (helmet, goggles, and cheich scarf) is provided at the camp.
When is the best time of year to do this tour?
The October to April window offers the most comfortable conditions: mild temperatures, clear Atlas views, and pleasant desert light, especially in the morning. The summer months (June through August) are very hot — temperatures in the Agafay plateau regularly exceed 40°C by midday. Morning departures are especially recommended in summer if you choose to go. The terrain and activities are available year-round, though we adapt departure timing seasonally to avoid peak heat.
